Drive Up Storage FAQs

Some facilities do offer climate-controlled drive-up storage, but act quick! These convenient units can be harder to find and they are highly coveted by collectors.

While some of the largest drive-up units can be used for vehicle storage, there are restrictions for what can and cannot be stored inside drive-up storage. Many storage facilities have dedicated outdoor parking for vehicles. Please check your Rental Agreement for additional details.

If the convenience of carside unloading and frequent trips to your storage unit is important to you, then drive-up storage unit is perfect for you.

While cost is driven by numerous factors, drive-up storage units are a cost-effective storage solution, with the added convenience of carside unloading.

What is Drive-Up Storage?

Drive-up storage is what most people think of when they envision a storage facility: low, single-story buildings with metal roll-up doors, surrounded by wide driveways, and fences.

As the name suggests, drive-up access is a storage option that allows you to drive your car, van or truck right up to the storage unit. These are great options for residential and business customers alike.

No matter what drives your need for storage, we have a unit for you.

Residential Storage

Homeowners and renters are the most frequent storage renters, and drive-up storage offers convenience and protection at a value rate. Often, residential customers are faced with storing several rooms’ worth of belongings in the aftermath of a life event, such as marriage or separation, childbirth, relocation or just decluttering.

Drive-up storage units eliminate the need to store your possessions in a garage or basement, and unloading right at car-side eliminates a lot of extra stress.

Business Storage

With extended hours and easy car-side access, drive-up storage is a popular choice for many businesses lacking space. Storage represents a cost-effective solution since it’s often cheaper than relocating. Plus, it minimizes the risk of upsetting your employees and/or loyal customer base with a location change.

Professional offices like medical clinics and law firms are required to keep patient and client information for several years after the last contact. Drive-up storage means that you can store these safely offsite and still leave room for your practice to expand rather than be consumed by records.

Merchants can store seasonal items or overflow inventory in storage facilities, and with drive-up storage, all the loading and unloading only takes minutes. E-commerce merchants, artisans and creators can also benefit from drive-up storage for inventory storage.

Contractors often store everything from building materials and replacement parts to tools and equipment. Manufacturers rely on storage facilities as ad hoc warehouse space.

How Big Are Drive-up Self-Storage Units?

There are many different sizes and configurations, so we’ve broken it down into our three most popular sizes: 5 ft. by 10 ft., 10 ft. by 10 ft., and 10 ft. by 20 ft.

What can I store in a 5 ft. by 10 ft. unit?

These units resemble a walk-in closet. Approximately 50 sq. ft. of floor space, these units can hold one or two pieces of furniture, a few boxes, seasonal items, gardening equipment, and so on.

What can I store in a 10 ft. by 10 ft. unit?

These units are about the size of a standard bedroom. Approximately 100 sq. ft. of floor space, these units can hold the equivalent of a 1- or 2-bedroom apartment. This includes small appliances, furniture, and a host of boxes and bins.

What can I store in a 10 ft. by 20 ft. unit?

The size of these units is comparable with a 1-car garage. Approximately 200 sq. ft. of floor space, these units can hold the equivalent of a 3- to 4-bedroom household. Major appliances, furniture and other household items fit nicely.

Do I Need a Drive-Up Storage Unit?

There’s a reason drive-up storage units have been around for so long: they are easy and convenient! They are especially nice for people who need frequent access to their belongings, or anyone who appreciates loading and unloading at car-side.

How Much Does Drive-Up Storage Cost?

There are a number of factors that determine rates, including location, unit size and more. Often, a drive-up storage unit will be less than a climate-controlled storage unit, but more expensive than an indoor storage unit. Climate-controlled drive-up units or drive-up units inside a storage facility cost more.
