What we like about Alachua

Alachua, Florida, is located less than 30 minutes from the bustling city of Gainesville. It has become a popular town in Alachua County, covering about 35 square miles, and is home to almost 10,000 residents. Even though it’s considered a small-town community, Alachua has a lot to offer!

Here are our favorite things about Alachua!

Past to Present

The history of Alachua was greatly affected by the nearby settlement of Newnansville. The settlement was established in 1818 and served as the county seat of Alachua until 1854.

Alachua got its start as a shipping point in 1884, when the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad bypassed Newnansville. Shortly after, settlers started moving their businesses to Alachua. Newnansville gave way to the new town, and eventually became abandoned.

Alachua opened a post office on April 30, 1887. Shortly after, other stores (including a hotel and a livery stable) were built, and in 1905, the City of Alachua became incorporated with a population of 526. From there, more hotels, banks, a department store and more were built across town.

Even though Alachua has grown and made great progress in the last century, the town still embraces and celebrates its past. (Keep reading to learn about the Historic Walking Tour!)

Education

The town of Alachua is near a few colleges and universities in the area, including Santa Fe College and the University of Florida in Gainesville.

University of Florida welcomed almost 58,000 students in fall of 2020, and their yearly enrollment continues to grow. It is also ranked No. 28 in the “Best National University Rankings” by U.S. News & World Report. The Gator Nation offers some of the best college athletics in America, consistently winning titles and championships.

Outdoor Activities

If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, Alachua is the place to be. Alachua is home to a number of neighborhood parks, including amenities like athletics fields, trails, picnic tables and more. You can even check out the Alachua Splash Park on a hot summer day.

You’ll also find San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park nearby. It is named after the 17th century Mission San Francisco De Potano. Today, it offers a number of hiking and biking trails, an equestrian trail, picnic spots and great birdwatching opportunities.

To do Around Town

Alachua is full of culture, entertainment and food that you just can’t miss! One absolute must-see is the Main Street Alachua Historic Walking Tour. It was created in 1986 by the Alachua County Historical Commission and the Alachua County Service. Check out some historic homes, buildings and businesses while enjoying many more shopping and dining experiences along the way! You can find even more retail shops and restaurants in Alachua Towne Centre.

If you work up an appetite while experiencing everything Alachua has to offer, you’re in luck. Alachua offers some awesome restaurants, cafes and delis to try. Check out Conestogas Restaurant for everything from hand-cut steaks to fresh seafood.

Or, try some pizza at New York Pizza Plus or My Pizza Place on Main for salads, subs and more pies. Tony and Al’s Deli also offers Italian cuisine, plus some tasty pasta dishes.

Drive on over to Gainesville for even more delicious grub, such as Mi Apa Latin Café for some mouthwatering ethnic cuisine.
