What we Like about Brandon

Brandon is more than a suburb in Hillsborough County in central Florida—there’s a lot going on. With water everywhere you turn, a premium shopping center, the Florida State Fairgrounds, and great eats, it’s easy to fall in love with Brandon. Check out the reasons why we believe Brandon is a great place to live

Here are some of our favorite things about Brandon!

History

The history of Brandon is unique—unique in that its existence and naming were due to one man—John Brandon.

In 1858, John Brandon traveled to the New Hope area (which is now Brandon), with his family. He bought 40 acres of land, and later 160 more. John built a family house, which eventually became the town's first post office.

John’s son James built his own family’s home, which is now Stowers Funeral Home, a historical place in Brandon. When the Florida Central and Peninsula Railroad came through the area, John’s second wife convinced a surveyor to lay out a map for a town, which she then named Brandon after her husband John Brandon.

Next came a general store, a school, and a second church. In 1922, the first census was taken, and the population totaled only 100 residents.

Today, Brandon is home to over 100,000 people, a premier shopping center and amazing dining options. Plus, easy access to the Florida State Fairgrounds and the wild city of Tampa.

Education

Brandon has a few colleges and universities in the area, and the town is minutes away from some of the large campuses in Tampa.

Southern Technical College Brandon CampusTabernacle Bible College, and Hillsborough Community College. Just a short drive away from the Brandon area is the University of South FloridaFlorida College, and the University of Tampa.

To do around town

One of Brandon’s claims to fame is Brandon Mall. It’s more than a shopping center. It first opened as Brandon Town Center in 1995, and then underwent a $50 million, 150,000 sq. ft. expansion in 2005. Today, there are approximately 156 stores and 31 dining options. Safe to say you could spend a week in the mall and not get bored.

Brandon has numerous other entertainment options, including the Astro Skate Family Fun Center roller rink, Oakfield Lanes bowling alley, Legends Escape Rooms, and even an axe-throwing center.

If you’d rather spend some time in the Florida sunshine, head to the Florida State Fairgrounds. The Florida State Fair normally operates during February, but the fairgrounds are open for the rest of the year. From rides to carnival food, to events, to concerts, you’ll always find something to do at the fair. Or check out the Hillsborough County Fair for more festival fun.

Brandon is also home to many parks and outdoor spaces to relax or play. All Persons Rotary Park has a playground and picnic shelters, Paul Sanders Park is great for biking or running, and Bertha and Tony Saladino Park has a basketball court and a dog park.

Sports

There may not be any professional sports in Brandon, but the renowned teams of Tampa Bay are just a short drive away!

Drive on over to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), Tampa Bay Rays (MLB), or the Tampa Bay Rowdies (USL) dominate their opponents at their home fields!

You can also catch the New York Yankees in Tampa for spring training starting in February.

Food

Brandon has a variety of must-try dining options—so good luck getting to them all! From fine dining to casual eateries and bistros, you’re sure to find something delicious.

If you’re looking for a casual pub restaurant with some great grub, check out The Stein and Vine. It may not look like much from the front, but everyone raves about the food. Bin + Board is in the heart of Brandon, serving up charcuterie plates featuring cheese and meat served in their wine bar.

Stop by Romi’s Tacos for some authentic Mexican food, or Cali for some California cuisine and taco Tuesdays.

You can also find some high-end meals at Stonewood Grill and Tavern or Jesse’s Steak and Seafood. Or try Donovan’s Modern American Meatery for surf, turf and some tasty dessert.
