What we Like About Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda is popular with snowbirds, retirees, vacationers and adventurers, as well as families looking to send their children to good schools away from the hustle and bustle of big-city life.

Considering the area has a lower unemployment rate than the national average, has well-rated schools, a lower cost of living than the U.S. average, and offers many local shops and restaurants, and plenty of outdoor activities, Punta Gorda should definitely be on the list of your considerations when looking to relocate to the Gulf Coast.

Past to Present

While inhabited for ages, the land jutting into Charlotte Harbor first showed up on maps in 1851 as Punta Gorda, or “Fat Point.” Even so, settlers didn’t arrive in the area until the late 1800s. The town was originally platted as “Trabue,” after the founder who attracted the railroad to the area. By 1887, townspeople decided talk about incorporation to create an infrastructure, which led to the adoption of the Spanish name.

During the early 20th century, a bridge was erected over the Peace River as part of the Tamiami Trail, making transit between Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda feasible. During World War II, an airfield was built to train fighter pilots; the airfield was turned over to the county after the war and has grown into Punta Gorda Airport for general and commercial aviation.

By the late 1950s, entrepreneurs began creating a network of canal-front homes, creating the area’s waterfront and golf-course communities which became popular with retirees.

In 2004, the area was widely damaged by Hurricane Charley. The city took advantage of the destruction by revitalizing the historic downtown and waterfront areas of town.

Charlotte County Public Schools operates five schools in the area, all of which are well regarded. The area also has a private school and charter school. The area’s higher education is served by a satellite campus of Florida SouthWestern State College.

Culture and Arts

Punta Gorda has 10 places on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Blanchard House Museum, which documents the role of African Americans in the founding of Punta Gorda (comprising about half the city’s founders).

The Grapefruit League descends on Florida during Major League Baseball’s Spring Training. The Gulf Coast hosts multiple teams from February through March (provided there’s no lock-out). Punta Gorda residents need only to head north across the bridge to check out local favorites, two-time World Series runners-up the Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park. Or, head south for the Boston Red Sox or Minnesota Twins, who both call Fort Myers their temporary home.

Other professional teams and sports require a bit of a drive. Tampa, the regular-season home to the Rays, plus the NHL’s Lightning, and the NFL’s Buccaneers, is a good hour-and-a-half north. Orlando (NBA’s Magic) is 2-1/2 hours away. Miami (NFL’s Dolphins, NHL’s Panthers) is closer to 3 hours away. Don’t even ask us about Jacksonville!

Nearby Florida SouthWestern State College is quickly becoming a hotbed of collegiate athletics since reinstating sports in 2015. Its main campus in Fort Myers is home to the 3,500-seat Suncoast Credit Union Arena, for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Teams also compete in baseball and softball.

Food & Recreation

Fishermen’s Village is Punta Gorda’s prime destination for vacationing, dining, shopping, adventuring and celebrating.

Seafood is on virtually all the menus, from The Captain’s Table for upscale to Harpoon Harry’s for casual fare. The Village is also home to a number of shops, from gifts, high-fashion apparel to T-shirts, jewelry, beachwear and diving gear, even shops dedicated to kids and pets.

Live music is featured throughout the Village Thursdays through Sundays, and the area also hosts a number of annual events. Check out the Key Lime Fest in late September or the International Culture Fest in mid-October for a change of pace.

Fishermen’s Village is also home to a top-rated public marina, with more than 100 slips and the ability to accommodate boats up to 60 ft. LOA with a 6-ft. draft. Of course, there are boat rentals, sightseeing cruises, fishing opportunities, and yacht charters available, too. What better way to explore the Peace River or Charlotte Harbor?
