What we like about Lafayette
Lafayette, IN is one-of-a-kind. So much so that the Indiana Chamber of Commerce selected Greater Lafayette (Lafayette and West Lafayette) as the 2021 Community of the Year.
What makes this city so special? Ask anyone and they’ll say, “Urban feel. Small-town real.” Think small town with big city amenities. There is plenty to do, but a strong sense of community everywhere you turn.
Here are some of our favorite things about Lafayette!
Past to Present
The area around present-day Lafayette was first discovered by Native American tribes, including the Wea, Miami, Potawatomi, Shawnee, Wyandot, Winnebago and Delaware. In 1717 the French government established Fort Ouiatenon just three miles south of where Lafayette is today.
Then in 1825, William Digby platted the area and named it after the Marquis de Lafayette, an important figure in the Revolutionary War.
The Wabash and Erie Canal arrived in the 1840s, greatly helping promote growth, trade and prominence. In the years that followed, railroads came to the city, and in 1859, Lafayette was the site for the first air mail flight by the United States Postal Service.
Another landmark year for Lafayette was 1869, when Purdue University was founded. (More on that later!)
Today, Lafayette is home to more than 70,600 residents, a vibrant and popular downtown, a neighboring world-renown university and some food and restaurants you just can’t miss.
That’s a lot of change!
Education
Lafayette is well-known for one university in particular—Purdue!
Purdue University was founded in 1869 and broke ground in 1871. Did you know? Neil Armstrong attended Purdue University, and Amelia Earhart was a member of the faculty. (Cool, right?)
Today, Purdue University is known for its incredible academic programs, especially engineering and nursing. Research is also important to the university. In fiscal 2018, Purdue reached $454.5 million of sponsored research funding.
But, Purdue isn’t all academics; athletics are a big deal, too. The Boilermakers belong to the Big 10 conference and have won five team national championships and 31 individual national championships across all sports.
There are also other colleges and universities in the area, including Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette Campus, Ross Medical Education Center, and Franklin University.
