What We Like About Houston

What’s the first thing you think of when we say Houston? Is it NASA? Professional sports? All the water? Or maybe you think of the 2.3 million residents and wonder if it’s getting a little crowded.

Good thing Store Space calls Houston home too! We’re here to offer everyone in the greater Houston area the best storage solutions. Here are a few things that make us love Houston!

History

The Allen brothers saw something in Houston that not everyone else did—lots of potential. They couldn’t have guessed that Houston would become one of the most populated cities in the United States, but their efforts helped mold it into the bustling metropolis it is today.

Found in 1836 and named after Texas legend Sam Houston, this town quickly grew and flourished. Houston became known as the Texas capital of commerce. By 1930, the Port of Houston became the 8th largest in the nation.

Not only did the Port of Houston succeed, but oil refineries also moved into town—making Houston the World’s Energy Capital.

The city has been thriving ever since. From “Houston” being the first word spoken on the moon, to an abundance of culture, food and business, you don’t want to overlook this bustling city.

NASA

It wouldn’t be right to talk about Houston and not mention NASA. The iconic and notable Manned Spacecraft Center was established in 1961 as the place responsible for human space flight.

Later, it was renamed after President Lyndon B. Johnson, abbreviated JSC, in 1973. It has since controlled flights from Gemini, Apollo and many more. Mission Control calls southeastern Houston home, and continues to be the primary location for NASA's space flight program.

Education

As the 4th largest city in the U.S. (based on population), there are bound to be a few college students in the Houston area.

That’s because 47,000 of them are enrolled at University of Houston alone. While it's population is a tenth of UH, Rice University is also one of the area's top universities. Other colleges in the area include Texas Southern University, University of St. ThomasHouston Community College SystemHouston Baptist UniversitySouth Texas College of Law, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Culture and Arts

The greater Houston area sure doesn’t shy away from culture and arts. With a whole district committed to theater and another devoted to museums, you’ll never be out of things to do!

There’s so much culture to absorb and embrace in Houston, it’s impossible to list every opportunity to enjoy it. But rest assured, there’s something for everyone in the area.

Downtown Houston isn’t the only place with things to do, see and explore. Houston cuisine is delicious and is home to many different styles and culture. Check out 10 essential dishes Houston is known for. There’s also vibrant culture just outside the city in Sugar Land and Humble.

Here are a few cultural activities to check out in Sugar Land and Humble nearby:

Sports

Houston is home to six professional sports teams. The Houston Astros play at Minute Maid Park, and won the World Series in 2017 and 2022. Houston’s professional soccer team, the Dynamo won the MLS cup in 2006 and 2007. The Toyota Center is home to the Rockets, who won back-to-back NBA titles 1994 and 1995. We can’t forget about the Houston TexansHouston Dash (NWSL) and Houston SaberCats (MLR)!

In terms of college sports, University of Houston and Rice University have impressive athletic programs. They both compete in NCAA Division 1 for football, basketball, baseball and more. Watch out for the UH Coogs, University of Houston has 17 NCAA Team Titles!

Houston's Food Scene

There’s one condition when you visit Houston—you have to bring your appetite. With winning cuisine at over 10,000 restaurants, they’ll kick you out if you’re not hungry. (Just kidding, but you really should try the food.) The food here is one of the biggest reason people should move to Houston.

With a variety of offerings, Houston is consistent in delivering mouthwatering dishes. In a location where fresh seafood is just a short distance away, many restaurants pride themselves on their locally caught ingredients.

From oysters at State of Grace and La Lucha, to fine dining at Le Jardinier and Brenner’s Steakhouse On the Bayou to award-winning restaurants like Crawfish and Noodles and The Blind Goat, you’ll get some good eats in Houston, TX!
