How to Open a Storage Unit Door

Steps to Opening Your Storage Unit

The most common door on a storage unit is the roll-up type. Like a garage door, these have a spring tensioner and ball bearings to make them easy to roll up!

Step 1

If this is your first time visiting your storage unit, there may be a safety tag in the latch. Simply remove it and unlatch the lock before attempting to open the door.

If your lock is on the door, unlock it and clear it from the latch.

If there is a lock on the door and you didn’t put it there, check with the manager!

Step 2

For a roll-up door, start by bending at the knees. Then, grab the door handle, and slowly raise the door, remembering to lift with your legs.

Step 3

Make sure to push the door up as high as it will go to prevent it from rolling back down.

Closing Your Storage Unit Door

When you’re done, make sure to close your storage unit.

Step 1

Reach up and grab the handle (or pull rope).

Step 2

Pull down the door until it gets to your waist, then push the remaining distance to the ground.

Step 3

Step on the handle to keep it from rolling back up while you align the door latch, then pass your lock’s shackle through the latch.

Step 4

Remember to lock your lock. If it has a dial code, remember to scramble the numbers. Finally, tug on the bottom part of the lock to ensure it’s fully locked.

Swing Doors

Some storage units have swing doors rather than roll-up doors. Make sure to clear any lock or tag from the latch, unlatch it, and then pull the door outward, holding onto it the entire time.

While you’re in your storage unit, you may want to block the door’s path with a small box or bin to keep it from being closed inadvertently. Remember to remove your makeshift doorstop before closing the door.

Swing the door closed, holding onto it the whole time to prevent slamming. Use your foot to keep it aligned while you pass your lock’s shackle through the latch.

Don’t forget to lock up!

In conclusion

Now you know how to open a storage unit! If you have any questions or run into any difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact your store manager!
