Past to Present
Founded in 1823, Macon was established on the banks of the Ocmulgee River. The city grew out of Fort Hawkins, which was a frontier fort established by the U.S. Army as a Native American Factory for trading and meeting with various tribes. The city was named for Nathaniel Macon, a beloved statesman.
Almost 300 years before the establishment of Fort Hawkins, the earliest Europeans including Hernando DeSoto ventured through the Macon area. Before this exploration, the Macon area and the Ocmulgee River basin were inhabited by several Native American tribes.
Today, Macon is a diverse city swirling with different cultures, Greek revival architecture, steep music heritage and a thriving art scene.
Education
Macon is home to several impressive colleges and universities, including Wesleyan College, the first college in the world to offer advanced degrees to women. Other universities in the Macon area include Middle Georgia State University and Mercer University.
