What we like about Providence

While Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States, Providence is one of the most exciting places to live in the country. Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, is located 52 miles south of Boston and 74 miles east of Hartford, CT.

Here are some of our favorite things about Providence:

Past to Present

One of the original Thirteen Colonies in North America, Providence was settled in June 1636 by Roger Williams, a Puritan minister. From this time on, Providence was the site of many events of historical importance including the first anti-slavery law in the United States and conflicts during the Revolutionary War.

Throughout the 1900s, Providence was a major manufacturer of industrial products. Specific products that were produced in Providence included textiles, precision tools and steam engines. In the 2000s, Providence developed a new plan to shift to a knowledge economy. The plan aimed to rebrand the city’s historic Jewelry District as a new “Knowledge District.”

Education

Providence is home to seven prominent colleges and universities. The total number of students among all schools totaled approximately 44,000 in 2007.

The most famous university in the city is Brown University. The school is an Ivy League University and is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. In addition to being the most coveted university in the city, Brown University is also one of the largest employers in Providence.

Additional colleges and universities in Providence include:

  • Providence College
  • Rhode Island College
  • Rhode Island School of Design
  • Roger Williams University
  • University of Rhode Island
  • Johnson & Wales University

Culture and Arts

Being the capital city of its state, Providence’s culture is synonymous with the culture of Rhode Island. The city hosts a number of events, art installations, and festivals, and the city is also home to several historic places and sites of interest.

Every summer the city hosts WaterFire, an environmental art installation that consists of bonfires, classical music and celebrations. The city also hosts multiple concert series, community-wide outdoor events and food truck festivals.

Popular points of interest in Providence include Roger Williams Park ZooRISD Museum of Art, Rhode Island State Capitol and Waterplace Park. The latter is a public park and social center for walking, biking, jogging and enjoying views of the Providence River.

Sports

Providence is home to several sports teams including the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, two rugby teams: the Rhode Island Rebellion and Providence Rugby Football Club, and several collegiate teams representing Brown University, Providence College and the University of Rhode Island.

The New England Patriots (NFL) and the New England Revolution (MLS) play their games in Foxborough, MA, half the distance between Providence and Boston.

Aside from home games for the Patriots in Foxborough, the most anticipated athletic competitions in Providence are between Brown University and Providence College. There is also quite a bit of buzz whenever either of these schools face off against the University of Rhode Island

Food

When it comes to food, Providence is home to just about every cuisine you can imagine. The city was even once reported to have the highest number of restaurants per capita out of all cities in the United States. Providence also has a large affinity for coffee and once also topped the country in most coffee and doughnut shops per capita.

Popular foods Providence is known for include:

  • Rhode Island Calamari
  • Clam Cakes
  • Stuffies (stuffed clams)
  • Rhode Island Clam Chowder
  • Pizza Strips
  • Johnnycakes (cornmeal pancakes)

Providence’s location near the Providence River and Narragansett Bay makes it a prime location to enjoy some of the best seafood in the United States. A few of the most popular seafood restaurants in Providence include Camille’s Restaurant, Mare Rooftop and the Black Duck Tavern
