What we like about Greenwood

Nestled in the heart of Greenwood County, South Carolina, Greenwood offers a mild subtropical climate in the Midlands Region of the state. Not only is Greenwood just minutes from the premier lake in the area (more on that later), the city is also a great spot to experience a festival, visit a museum or watch a show!

Greenwood is a good place to move to, and a great place to live. Here are some of our favorite things about Greenwood:

Past to Present

John McGehee was one of the first settlers to live in the present-day Greenwood area. His home dates back to 1824, but the area didn’t see major growth until the railroad arrived in 1852.

Textile mills soon became an important aspect of Greenwood’s economy and is still a key industry today. The city then built businesses and schools and was officially incorporated in 1857.

Education has always been a pillar of the Greenwood community. Before the city was even chartered, there were multiple schools in the area. In 1904, Lander University moved to Greenwood, and Piedmont Technical College opened in 1966.

Education

The city of Greenwood still values education today, with two higher education centers right in town.

Lander University was founded in 1872 by Samuel Lander. It was originally a women’s college—Williamston Female College in Williamston, SC. It was relocated and renamed in 1904 to Greenwood, and men were admitted in 1943. Today, the university’s vision is to educate and help students become informed, prepared and equipped for life after graduation.

Piedmont Technical College was established in 1966 and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. It is a two-year college, offering a variety of programs. Piedmont Technical college serves counties across South Carolina and provides students with hands-on experience in the latest technologies.

Outdoor fun

You just have to check out Lake Greenwood when you’re in town. It’s just a short drive away, but it’s an awesome place to explore. The lake runs 20 miles and includes 212 miles of shoreline (it’s 11,000 acres!). That means there is plenty of room to boat, fish, waterski, swim and more.

You can also check out Lake Greenwood State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Many popular outdoor activities include water sports and hiking, camping and picnicking.

If you don’t want to head to the lake, you can also check out one of the many parks and trails in Greenwood.

What To Do Around Town

From festivals to arts and entertainment to shopping—Greenwood has something that piques everyone’s interest.

The city hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, the most well-known include the SC Festival of Flowers and the SC Festival of Discovery (both are usually held in the summer). But you can find even more events and attractions here.

There are a variety of historical experiences and arts in the Greenwood area, like the Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Historic Preservation Site, The Emerald Triangle (an arts and culture district), Ninety Six National Historic Site and much more.

Food

If you’re looking for a bite to eat in Greenwood, you won’t be disappointed! The city offers a variety of options to choose from—with everything from Venezuelan cuisine to southern soul food.

The Venezuelan Spot offers authentic flavor and delicious food (we suggest trying the cachapas or arepas). If you’re in the mood for Cuban cuisine, you just have to stop by Buenavista Latin Café, and check out Fusion: Japanese and Thai for a combination of cuisines and cultures.

Check out Montague’s Restaurant for some tasty American cuisine, or The Mill House for casual dining (sandwiches, pasta and pizza). The Amish Oven offers some delicious country cooking, and Southern Soul on Main serves up feel-good classics.
