What we like about Orlando

Who doesn’t love Walt Disney World? Even though it’s an extremely popular tourist destination, it is just one of the many attractions that make Orlando one of the most-visited cities in the world. In 2018, Orlando was the No. 1 U.S. travel destination with 75 million visitors. We’re thrilled to call Orlando home and make every Orlandoan’s storage dreams come true.

The Name “Orlando”

Did you know? To this day, no one definitively knows how Orlando got its name. There are stories—a few including an early politician, Judge James Speer.

The first is that Judge Speer named the city after a man who worked for him. Another is that it was named after a random Mr. Orlando that was passing through the city and died there. A third story is that the city was named after a character in Shakespeare’s play “As You Like It” because Judge Speer loved Shakespeare.

These aren’t the only theories, but many believe Judge Speer is connected to the name. Is it a coincidence that Rosalind, the main street running through the city of Orlando shares a name with the love interest of the character Orlando in “As You Like It?” Who knows!

Education

The greater Orlando area is not lacking in universities. There are more than 35 colleges, universities and private institutions in the area.

University of Central Florida is ranked in the top 20 of U.S. News and World Reports “Most Innovative Schools” category. UCF is also one of the largest universities by enrollment in Florida. With 71,948undergrad students in Fall 2020, the school had a higher enrollment than Texas A&MRollins College is No. 1 in U.S. News and World Report’s list of “Best Regional Universities” in the South.

There are numerous other colleges in the area, including Florida A&M University College of LawSeminole State College of FloridaAdventHealth UniversityFlorida Technical CollegeFull Sail UniversityJohnson University Florida in Kissimmee and Valencia College.

Theme Parks

Orlando is known as the theme park capital of the world. Long before Mickey and his friends came into town, Gatorland opened in 1949, and that was just the beginning. If you have a fear of alligators, maybe don’t visit the Alligator Capital of the World, just stop by one of Orlando’s other incredible theme parks.

Walt Disney World Resort opened in 1971, and quickly became a popular destination for families from all over. The Disney Decade in the '90s was a phenomenal period of growth and expansion. Fun Fact: Walt Disney World takes up about 43 square miles, and is big enough to hold more than 50 Disneylands. Not to mention there are four theme parks, two water parks, over 25 resorts and hotels, plus four golf courses.  There are also plenty of Disney secrets that have been shared over the years. (You didn’t hear it from us.)

Calling all the Harry Potter fans! Get on your broomsticks and fly to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.  If you need a break from the witchcraft and wizardry, visit Volcano Bay for some water park fun!

Speaking of water parks, we can’t forget SeaWorld Orlando! Not only can you swim with creatures from the deep—dolphins, sharks and more—you can experience roller coasters, rides and slides all day long.

If you’re a fan of playing with Legos visit the LEGOLAND Florida Resort. With a theme park and water park, you have plenty of rides and activities to choose from. Just be careful not to step on any Legos while you’re there!

Culture and Food

Orlando is more than just theme parks. There are museumsarts, entertainment and plenty of restaurants for locals to escape the tourists for a night on the town.

Be sure to check out the Orlando Museum of Art and the Mennello Museum of American Art to explore local and international exhibits. The Orange County Regional History Center, Heritage Square Park and the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida are historical and educational experiences you don’t want to miss. There are also performing arts centers, including Orlando Ballet and a Shakespeare theater, Orlando Shakes.

While you’re running around in Orlando, you’ll need some fuel. By fuel, we mean food—and Orlando has a lot of it.

There is even an official Restaurant Row, including over two dozen restaurant options from upscale to casual eateries. With seafood at Big Fin Seafood Kitchen and Japanese at Dragonfly Robata Grill and Sushi, Turkish cuisine from Bosphorous and fine dining at Chatham’s Place—you won’t go hungry. Plus if you didn’t get enough adventure already, get dinner and a show at one of Disney’s resorts
