Past to Present
Did you know? South Elgin started out as Clintonville. In 1835, a small settlement was established in Clintonville with flour mills and a blacksmith shop. The post office changed its name to South Elgin in the mid-1880s, and shortly after on April 20, 1897, the Village of South Elgin was incorporated. The area has transformed from a small farming community to the modern village it is today.
Currently, more than 27,497 residents call South Elgin home. As the area has grown and undergoes future development projects, it still embraces its history. South Elgin has started a major project compiling personal stories from residents and hopes to share the town’s history with future generations.
Parks and Recreation
You’ll have no problem finding outdoor activities in South Elgin! The village offers a number of parks and recreation opportunities.
With more than 56 acres of passive parkland, 125 acres of active parkland and 200 acres of natural areas, you have plenty of space to explore the outdoors! Blackhawk Park is on the west side of town, with athletics fields, a wildlife observation deck, fishing and acres of open space.
