Glen Cove was founded in 1668 by early settlers including Joseph Carpenter, Nicholas Simkins and brothers Nathaniel, Daniel and Robert Coles. These men originally named the settlement “Musketa Cove,” but the name was changed to Glen Cove in 1834 to attract more visitors and residents from New York City.

Major industries that impacted Glen Cove’s history include mills in the 17th and 18th centuries and clay mining in the early 19th century. At the beginning of the 1900s, many wealthy industrialists and businesspeople moved to Glen Cove and built estates along the waterfront. As more businesses came to the area, Glen Cove continued to grow.

Glen Cove was considered part of the Town of Oyster Bay for 250 years. It became a city in 1917, when the population reached more than 10,000 residents.


The city of Glen Cove is served by Glen Cove City School District, one of the most diverse districts in New York. About 3,280 students are enrolled in grades PK and K-12, and the district includes four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. According to, 55% of students are proficient or higher in math and 49% in reading.
