Glen Cove offers residents a dense suburban atmosphere with beautiful waterfront views, a vibrant downtown and plenty of entertainment opportunities. About 27,000 residents enjoy everything Glen Cove has to offer, including the small-town atmosphere, low crime rates and above-average schools.

History

Glen Cove was founded in 1668 by early settlers including Joseph Carpenter, Nicholas Simkins and brothers Nathaniel, Daniel and Robert Coles. These men originally named the settlement “Musketa Cove,” but the name was changed to Glen Cove in 1834 to attract more visitors and residents from New York City.

Major industries that impacted Glen Cove’s history include mills in the 17th and 18th centuries and clay mining in the early 19th century. At the beginning of the 1900s, many wealthy industrialists and businesspeople moved to Glen Cove and built estates along the waterfront. As more businesses came to the area, Glen Cove continued to grow.

Glen Cove was considered part of the Town of Oyster Bay for 250 years. It became a city in 1917, when the population reached more than 10,000 residents.

Education

The city of Glen Cove is served by Glen Cove City School District, one of the most diverse districts in New York. About 3,280 students are enrolled in grades PK and K-12, and the district includes four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. According to Niche.com, 55% of students are proficient or higher in math and 49% in reading.

Regarding higher education, the New York Institute of Technology-Long Island Campus is near Glen Cove. The campus covers 176 acres, offering students STEM-infused degree programs, certificate programs and minors.

Outdoor Fun 

We’ve already mentioned that water surrounds Glen Cove on three sides—so it’s no surprise that there are numerous outdoor recreation opportunities in the area. Whether you’re excited to get on the water, spend a day at the beach or go golfing—you can do it all in Glen Cove!

There are boat ramps, three private yacht clubs, and one marina in Glen Cove. Sailing and racing are popular water sports in the area. Glen Cove is also home to three beaches including Pryibil Beach and Fishing Pier and Crescent Beach (for Glen Cove residents only) and Morgan Memorial Park (for Glen Cove and Locust Valley residents only).
